Bicycling with Clipless Pedals   by Jimmy Riddle

It is not surprising that bicyclists find the idea of Clipless Pedals
bewildering. The inventive clipless pedal replaced the outmoded and unfashionable strap and cage design toe-clips (the name reflects this – meaning that you can ride without the hassle of toe-clips). Although the clipless pedal system is more expensive than toe-clips the cost has come to be accepted because performance is enhanced. Some cyclists worry about the difficulty of removing the feet swiftly when you need to stop. This only really becomes a dilemma if you are required to stop unexpectedly when a car, animal or pedestrian enters into your immediate path.

The clipless pedal works in tandem with the cyclist’s shoes which have a cleat fixed to the underside. The cleat fastens into the pedal when the rider mounts the bicycle. In most cases this is done by pressing down in the correct position to engage the cleat. There are numerous designs on the market but most have a similar release mechanism. To remove the foot from the pedal it is usually a matter of twisting the heel to disengage the cleat from the pedal. This can take while to get used to but with some training it soon becomes second nature.

The main benefit of clipless pedals being that they provide improved performance. There are some downsides to using a clipless system. Increased performance comes at a cost financially because the pedals and shoes can be highly priced. Cleats/shoes have to be congruent with matching pedals as most systems are not interchangeable. It is not impossible but rather uncomfortable to use the pedals without the shoes. The cleats are open to damage when walking to and from the bicycle.

Clipless pedals are not only popular with road bikes but are also used significantly in off-road cycling as well. In fact it is the participation in sports like mountain biking (MTB) and downhill events that has pushed this technology along. The most sought after brand names for clipless pedals are Crank Brothers, Time (ATACS) and Shimano Spd. Crank Brothers most successful invention is a pedal known as the Egg Beater which has a four sided entry. It is one of the most intuitive clipless pedals to use and appeals to both road and off-road cyclists.

If you are still riding with old fashioned cage and strap toe-clips or power grips it might be time to consider upgrading to clipless pedals.
