Fish has been one of the staple food for majority of the population even during prehistoric times. To support this fact, there were archeological remains excavated from various locations and archaic caves with paintings and drawings which showed evidences that early inhabitants consumed freshwater fish and sea foods.
Fishing is not only a means of hunting or providing for food, it is also a source of livelihood for some. Statistically, the total number of fishermen and fish farmers is estimated at thirty eight million. Over 58 million people are provided with employment by fisheries and aquaculture.
Traditional fishing or alternatively called Artisan Fishing refers to the small scale commercial or survival fishing practices. It also applies to coastal or island ethnic groups employing traditional techniques of catching like rod and tackle, arrows and harpoons, throw and drag nets, or traditional Fishing Boats. This act of fishing is often less intensive, thus gives less stress on the fish population in contrast to modern commercial fishing techniques. Since there is insufficient investment in refrigeration and processing of, workers in this field find difficulty in exporting their products. But in essence, domestic consumption is the main goal of artisan fishing, a source of inexpensive and accessible protein in poor coastal areas.
When fishing is done for pleasure or competition, then it is called Recreational or Sport Fishing. There are conventions, rules, licensing restrictions and laws which limit the way fishes may be caught in Recreational Fishing. For instance, using nets is not allowed as well as using hooks to catch a fish but only in the mouth. There are many types of Fishing Equipment used to aid in catching a fish, such as Rod, reel, line, hooks, baits and artificial Lures (such as spinners or dry flies) are the common tools used in recreational fishing. Angling is the term used to describe the practice of catching a fish with a hook, where often times the fish I required to be returned to the water. It is common for recreational or sport fishermen to join in competitions or log their catches. There is an event called Big-game fishing where the act is one from boats to catch large open-water Fish Species like tuna, sharks and marlin. While Sport fishing or sometimes called game fishing is one event where the prize in catching a fish is actually the challenge of finding and catching rather than the gastronomic and financial quality of the fish caught. The list of sought-after fish encompass tarpon, sailfish and mackerel.
Capturing fish for profit, gain or commercial purposes I described as Commercial Fishing. Mostly done in wild fisheries, it is the source of large food quantity provision all over the world. Industrial fishing refer to Large scale commercial fishing. Fish like cod and salmon is not the only animal of interest in commercial fishing, some of them are shrimps, lobsters, clams, squids and crabs. Factory ships are utilized as a fishing vessel in commercial fishing. Tools used are hand-casting nets, pot traps and huge fleet of trawlers to process tons of fish daily. Restrictions on fishing allocations and international treaties limit the fishing effort and efficiency.
Commercial fishing has its occupational risk. There are worse instances where fishermen go far into the ocean under adverse conditions and inadequate fishing and safety equipments.
